Inquiry: tackling inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities

The Women and Equalities Committee has launched an inquiry to look at the inequalities experienced by Gypsies, Roma and Travellers, the effectiveness of policymaking, and what action the Government can take to tackle the inequalities. The committee is particularly keen to hear directly from Gypsies, Roma and Travellers about their own experiences. The deadline for written submissions is Friday 27 January 2017.

In July 2015, at the request of the then Prime Minister and Home Secretary, Dame Louise Casey was asked to undertake a review into integration and opportunity in our most isolated and deprived communities, and this report gives the findings of the review.

Government consultation on caste discrimination and the Equality Act 2010

The government is to undertake a full public consultation on the issue of caste and the Equality Act 2010. A key aim of the consultation will be to obtain the views of the public on whether additional measures are needed to ensure victims of caste discrimination have appropriate legal protection and effective remedies under the 2010 Equality Act.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation launched its anti-poverty strategy, ‘We can solve poverty in the UK’, in September 2016. The report makes clear the many links between poverty and protected characteristics, most notably the disproportionate way poverty affects women, BME and disabled people, and single parents.
