House of Lords Library briefing: Disability in the UK – Rights and Policy

A House of Lords Library briefing has been prepared ahead of the 28 June House of Lords debate on the challenges disabled people face in the UK. Find out more.

The briefing provides an overview of the legal framework governing disabled people’s rights in the UK in both in domestic and international law; in the Equality Act 2010 and the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. It also examines some possible implications for disabled people of the UK’s exit from the European Union.

The briefing includes a reading list of recent select committee reports and briefings which look at issues that disabled people face across policy areas such as accessibility, housing, benefits, employment, education and transport.
