The office of the Children’s Commissioner produced a report on the support provided to young carers in England in December 2016. The report highlighted that more than 160,000 children in England have formal caring responsibilities – and of these, 130,000 are missing out on support from local authorities.
The British Medical Association launched their Equality Lens in December 2016. This is an information resource providing an equalities analysis of the UK medical workforce in the UK, and will frame the BMA’s equalities work going forward.
The Government published a green paper, ‘Improving Lives’, on work, disability and health in October 2016. The Government also launched an open consultation seeking views on what it will take to transform employment prospects for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. The consultation is open until 17 February 2017.
NatCen Social Research published research, commissioned by UNISON, into the implications of public spending reductions on LGBT people and services in November 2016.
Leonard Cheshire Disability published a report, ‘The State of Social Care in Great Britain 2016’, in November 2016. The report looks at the state of social care in Britain today and how a crisis in social care is impacting on the lives of disabled people across the country.
The Department of Health launched a listening programme to work with people with dementia and their carers in November 2016. The programme will include different ways of gathering people’s views and experiences, both in person and online.
The Royal College of Nursing published research on caring for trans patients in November 2016. Its survey of more than 1,200 nursing staff across the UK found 87% of those nurses who have directly cared for a trans patient felt unprepared to meet the patient’s needs.
The Department for Education published a research report into the New Belongings programme, written by Jo Dixon and Claire Baker, in October 2016.
Age UK published their report, ‘Hidden in Plain Sight – the unmet mental health needs of older people’, in October 2016. Using data from 55 mental health trusts as well as 130 clinical commissioning groups in England, this report shows that current provision of support is insufficient for both the needs at present and in the face of a rapidly ageing society.
World AIDS Day 2016 takes place on 1 December 2016. The National AIDS Trust published teacher resources for the day in October 2016.
