Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies: Gender and free movement – EU Migrant Women’s Access to Residence and Social Rights in the UK

Gender divisions in relation to paid work and unpaid care structure access to rights to residence and to social benefits and privileges a particular type of ‘disencumbered’ EU citizen-worker.

This is according to a June 2017 article on the rights of EU migrant women by Isabel Shutes and Sarah Walker in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

The article considers citizenship and free movement from a gender perspective, revealing the gendered effects in terms of women’s potential exclusion from access to residence and social rights as mobile EU citizens.

Making rights to residence and to social benefits contingent on the market or family dependency is likely to contribute to gender and class-based inequalities in access to residence and social rights.
