Institute for Fiscal Studies report: Inequalities in the twenty-first century

‘As at no other time in recent history, inequalities dominate the economic and policy debate.’

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has released a new report introducing the Deaton Review (pdf), setting out some key background facts, questions and puzzles that the review intends to address over the next five years.

Among other things, this introductory report explores:

  • How to define inequality
  • The sources of our deepening economic and social divides
  • The role of policy in mitigating or exacerbating inequality
  • The task ahead for the review.
