House of Commons Library briefing paper: Migration Statistics

The UK is among the EU countries with the largest inflows of foreign nationals, but it is not unique. In 2015, the EU countries with the largest inflows of foreign nationals were Germany (1,460,000), the UK (548,000), Spain (290,000) and Italy (250,000).

This is according to the October 2017 briefing paper (pdf) on migration statistics, by the House of Commons Library.

The briefing paper finds:

  • The number of people migrating to the UK has been greater than the number emigrating since 1994
  • In the year ending March 2017, work was the most common main reason for immigration, while formal study was the second most common main reason.
  • The UK’s migrant population is concentrated in London. Around 36% of people living in the UK who were born abroad live in the capital city.
