Only 20% (23 of 115) of those reporting incidents to Report Racism GRT had also reported the incident to the police.
This is according to the June 2018 report from Goldsmiths, University of London. This report is based on the findings from the Report Racism GRT website and analyses the cases of hate incidents and discrimination crime towards Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities.
- 18% of the incidents reported to the site by people from GRT groups were reported to police compared with 27% of third parties reporting to police
- The most common reason for not reporting to police was a lack of confidence that the police would act. 57% of people who did not report to police gave this reason
- The second most common reason was that people felt that such incidents were ‘too common an occurrence’ with 41% of those who did not report incidents to police stating this as a reason
- Online hate was the most common type of incident with 67% of reporter choosing this category. There is clearly a high rate of online abuse towards GRT groups.
