Women and Equalities Committee report: Tackling inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people have the worst outcomes of any ethnic group across a huge range of areas, including education, health, employment, criminal justice and hate crime.

This is according to the April 2019 Women and Equalities Committee report (pdf) on inequalities facing Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

The Government has two months to respond.

The report recommends:

  • Cabinet Office create a specific workstream within the Race Disparity Unit for eliminating Gypsy and Traveller inequalities
  • Gypsy, Irish Traveller and Roma categories should be added to the NHS data dictionary as a matter of urgency
  • The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government should work with grassroots Gypsy, Roma and Traveller organisations to formulate a wide-ranging campaign to explain the importance of collecting such data and to encourage self-disclosure.
