Parliament Education Service teaching resource: LGBT+ Rights in Focus

July 2017 marks 50 years since the Sexual Offences Act 1967 decriminalised consensual sexual relationships between men over 21 in England and Wales.

Through video and discussion, these teaching resources explore legislation that has had an impact on LGBT+ rights in the UK.

Learning Outcomes

These resources support elements of the history and citizenship curriculums and can be used to support learning during LGBT history month.

Students will:

  • Understand the term ‘protected characteristics’ and the rights available to everyone.
  • Gain a greater understanding of legislation that has impacted LGBT+ people, including the significance and impact of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act.
  • Explain the effect laws can have on society and identify an Act of Parliament that has helped make society more equal.
