Labour Exploitation Advisory Group report: Detaining Victims – Human Trafficking and the UK Immigration System

The Labour Exploitation Advisory Group have published a July report 2019 on their the issues experienced by victims of human trafficking whilst in immigration detention in the UK.

The report recommends:

  • The UK Government should commission an independent review of whether or not immigration officials are following the presumption in favour of liberty and that detention is only being used as a last resort, as stated in the Home Officce Chapter 55: Enforcement Instructions and Guidance
  • The Government should fund an independent support provider to have presence in all Immigration Removal Centres to act as a first point of contact for people who have experienced trauma, abuse and exploitation. This independent support provider should also serve as a first responder under the NRM in detention
