EDF views on the future of equality

In August 2010, Jonathan Rees, Director General of the Government Equality Office, wrote to Sarah Spencer, Chair of the Equality and Diversity Forum (EDF), asking the Forum’s views on future priorities for equality strategy and spending.

EDF’s response included:

  • the importance of mainstreaming equality across all areas of policy
  • the role of equality impact assessments in relation to spending reductions
  • the completion of work on the Equality Act
  • work on using procurement to advance equality of opportunity
  • the opportunities presented by the public sector equality duty
  • the important role of equality organisations in the voluntary and community sector and concerns about the impact that spending reductions will have on the sector’s capacity
