Citizens Advice report: Universal Credit and Modern Employment

By 2022, an estimated 7.2 million families in the UK will receive Universal Credit (UC) – 3.9 million of which will be in work.

This is according to the April 2018 report by Citizens Advice on the Universal Credit and Modern Employment.

The report argues that Universal Credit risks leaving workers’ financial stability hanging in the balance, and diminishes incentive to work or increase their hours.

It recommends that to incentivise work and provide low-income families with financial security, the government should review:

  •  the lowered work allowance
  • the Minimum Income Floor for the self employed
  • the flexibility of UC’s monthly assessment period
  • the budgeting support available to UC claimants
