Improving Parliament. Creating a better and more representative House was launched in July 2014 by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Women in Parliament.
It is the report of an inquiry launched to investigate what could be done to create a more aspirational, modern and representative Parliament. While the main focus of the Inquiry has been on increasing the number of women in public life, many of the findings will be valid for all parliamentarians.
The Inquiry’s scope was to look at the elected House of Commons and identify barriers, challenges and improved ways of working for the future. It was examined in three stages:
- Supply – outreach to women from all backgrounds and changing the perception of MPs
- Selection – a review of progress in each of the political parties since the Speaker’s Conference 2008-2010
- Retention – how the working environment in Parliament can be improved
