APPG meeting on the UK’s progress on meeting the UPR recommendations – 3 February 2015

On 3 February 2015 the APPG on Equalities held a meeting in the House of Commons on the UK’s progress on meeting the recommendations laid out in the Universal Periodic Review.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is the process which involves a periodic review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. It provides an opportunity for all States to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries. The Ministry of Justice coordinates the UPR for the UK. The UK last underwent the UPR in 2012. In 2014, the UK submitted a mid-term report on the recommendations received at the conclusion of the UPR in 2012. To tie in with this the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) published its Mid-Term Universal Periodic Review Report (UPR).

The meeting was chaired by Sandra Osborne MP with the following guest speakers.

  • The Lord Faulks QC, Minister of State for Civil Justice and Legal Policy within the Ministry of Justice, who provided an overview of the Government’s progress in meeting the UPR’s recommendations and of next steps in the UPR cycle.
